Spicar's Martial Arts in Southlake, TX has been featured in the August 2013 issue of the Southlake Style magazine! This awesome article about founders Adam and Lucie Spicar will shed a little light on how the largest and most successful martial arts center in Southlake got started.

Here is the article:

It’s been more than five years since Adam and Lucie Spicar opened Spicar’s Martial Arts in Southlake, but the couple’s passion for karate originated long before they planted their Texas roots. Adam, a Czech Republic native, first arrived in the United States in 1996 as a foreign exchange student. He then returned to his birth country to complete his required military service before permanently settling down in the U.S. in 2001 with Lucie, who’s also from the Czech Republic. Adam’s childhood captivation with martial arts heroes like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan in addition to the training he received during his military service ultimately guided him to pursue martial arts.

In 2003, the couple met Sid Nelson, a Kentucky-based martial arts master instructor who eventually became their mentor as well as a father figure.

“We both fell in love with martial arts because it was an individual sport where you could be as good as you wanted to be,” Adam says. He and Lucie soon wanted to open their own practice, although they didn’t want to move too far from Mr. Nelson, who was like family to them. They explored Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee but discovered the economy wasn’t faring well in any of those states.

When Adam and Lucie visited Texas in 2008 for a martial-arts exhibition, they immediately fell in love with the area, realizing that Southlake’s affluent market offered them the optimal opportunity to start a business doing what they loved — teaching students the importance of self-discipline, respect and self-defense. They opened Spicar’s Martial Arts, now a large 3,000-square-foot professional martial arts center conveniently located in Southlake’s Kroger shopping center and serve communities in and around Southlake and currently has hundreds of kids, teens and adults enrolled.

Spicar’s is a traditional school that provides an Americanized approach to students. High standards, uniform requirements, a code of conduct and a rank hierarchy are all part of the oldest style of Taekwondo, also known as Korean Karate, a Korean martial art that’s the most practiced in the world. Students at Spicar’s, whether they are 4-year-olds having fun or business executives trying to relieve stress, find that they can develop self-discipline, patience, focus, respect and self-defense skills in a fun and safe environment where Adam, Lucie and 20 other black belt instructors interact with everyone in a friendly and engaging manner. The owners are not only senior-certified instructors, but they also have years of teaching experience behind them — plus two young sons they can’t wait to immerse in the martial arts world.

“We are a positive school,” Adam says. “We always try to bring out the best in each of our students, whether a child, a teenager or an adult.”
