What Martial Art Is From Vietnam?

Did you know?

Often, students ask me very interesting questions. I had a student the other day who posed an interesting question if I knew any martial art from Vietnam. As a practitioner of the most famous martial art in the world, Taekwondo, it took me by surprise. So, that evening I used Google to look up some information and here is what I found:

Vovinam is a Vietnamese martial art. It was founded in 1938.

Vovinam is a Vietnamese martial art that combines elements of traditional Vietnamese martial arts and Chinese martial arts. It is known for its use of strikes, grappling, and weapons techniques.

Vovinam has been praised for its effectiveness as a martial art. It combines techniques from a variety of different styles and focuses on both self-defense and sport. However, the effectiveness of any martial art will ultimately depend on the skill and dedication of the practitioner.

The main weapon in Vovinam is the long staff (also known as the "Vovinam stick"). It is typically used to train students in weapon techniques, and to improve their physical strength, coordination, and flexibility. In addition to the staff, Vovinam also incorporates training with other weapons such as the sword, knife, and saber.

You can learn Vovinam at Vovinam schools or clubs, which can be found in many countries around the world, including Vietnam, France, and the United States. You can search for Vovinam schools or clubs near you online, or through local directories.

The ranking system in Vovinam usually consists of colored belts that indicate the level of proficiency, with black belt being the highest rank. The specific requirements for each rank vary among schools and organizations, but typically include passing technical exams and demonstrating proficiency in various techniques.
